CrossFit Memphis – Athlete of the Month
June 2009 – Chris Nunn

- “Doug has been a great help for me. He has given me information and tips in nutrition and training that I will use for the rest of my life. He pushed me further than I thought I could go and he never let me give anything less than all I had. He was a very personable trainer and we had a great time together during our time. Mike did a great job of helping me whenever I needed it, and he always had a comment to keep me grounded. I enjoyed watching him train and the life lessons he taught me.” – Chris Nunn
Chris Nunn joined CrossFit Memphis in August of 2008. He wanted to be in prime physical condition for his senior year as a baseball standout with Harding Academy of Memphis. After 6 months of hardcore CrossFit conditioning, Chris was ready for workouts designed specifically for his future goal of becoming a major league pitcher. Chris began working with CrossFit Memphis Performance Coach, Doug Larson in last January of 2009.
Simply put, his results have been truly remarkable for an 18 year old. It’s rare to find such a young person who is mature enough to know exactly what they want out of life and then dedicate themselves 100% to achieving their goal. People like Chris are a dream for any coach. He always listens and does his best to apply what he has learned immediately. He’s never embarrassed to ask questions, is always striving to get better, and always practices the mentality of “smarter, not harder”.
These are the same qualities that helped Chris achieve the following accomplishments:
- Accepted to Lipscomb University – Nashville, Tennessee
- 3.14 High School GPA
- Division 2A All-West Region Team
- Division 2A All-West Region Tournament Team
- All Shelby-Metro Team
- Athletic Scholarship
- Provost Academic Scholarship
- Hope Scholarship
- Scholarships totaling $122,000
Within 10 weeks of beginning his Goal Specific Training Program Chris had gained 13lbs to help fill out his 6′5″ frame. Over the 3 months total he spent on his Goal Specific Training Program, his front squat went from 176lbs for 1 set of 3 reps to 165lbs for 4 sets of 6 reps! His glute ham raise exercise strength improved from 5 reps with bodyweight to 10 reps with bodyweight plus a small band (used for extra resistance). Those stats will mean more to some of you than others; just know that those are some phenomenal strength gains!!
On the baseball field Chris was equally impressive. As a pitcher with an ERA of 1.21 and record of 6 wins with only 1 loss, Chris managed to earn a batting average of 0.441 over 102 at bats. On top of that he hit 3 homeruns as a pitcher!! For those of you who are baseball fans you will know that those are some pretty impressive stats at any level!
Everyone at CrossFit Memphis is very proud of your accomplishments, Chris!
Best of luck in college, and the pros!
