CrossFitters,
Thanks to those that have already signed up for the 2009 Trevor Win’E Memorial Challenge. We had a great time last year and all the soldiers that received cooling vests as a result of the money we raised really appreciate your personal support!!
For those of you who are interested in your business sponsoring the event please hurry. We’ll be ordering the shirts on May12th to ensure that we get them before the competition, so we need your logos and such before that date.
Nutrition Tip:
Multivitamin/mineral products only address a small portion of the micronutrients that your body requires to function optimally.
If you eat poor quality, unnatural, processed foods consisting of mostly refined grains with limited amounts of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and meats than you are sure to be unsympathetically deficient somewhere along the line. Without eating a wide variety of raw natural foods (organic is best) you may be missing out on thousands of important nutrients such as (stick with me here…):
- Phytochemicals and/or phytonutrients including: phenols, isoprenoids, betalains, organosulfides, indoles, glucosinolates, protein inhibitors and other organic acids.
- Antioxidants including: carotenoid terpenoids such as lycopene and astaxanthin
- Fiber variety (and as a result short-chain fatty acids via large intestine fermentation processes) including: cellulose, hemicellulose, lignans, plant waxes, resistant starches, beta-glucans, pectins, natural gums, inulins, oligosaccharides, and resistant dextrins
- Essential fatty acids specifically omega 3 fatty acids: Alpha linolenic acid (plant omega-3s) and EPA/DHA (marine omega 3s)
- Digestive enzymes including: amylase, bromelain, lactase, lipase, ox bile, pancreatin, papain, pepsin, and protease.
Summary: So what’s the point of the ridiculous, science saturated lists mentioned above? Simply to point out that there is a lot more to food than simply calories and if you are going to get all the these necessary nutrients in your diet then you need to branch out once in a while.
Can’t figure out why you are always hungry even though you eat all the time? It may be that you are getting enough calories but your body is missing some of the nutrients mentioned above so it is still telling you to eat! Happens all the time. Remember food quality is always most important, then nutrient timing THEN quantity.
Note that I didn’t say quantity wasn’t important I just said food quality was VERY important! So toss out the junk and buy high quality fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and meats. The darker the better, the more colors the better!!!
If you want to see the latest and most accurate method of measuring bodyfat be sure to check out today’s blog video of Mike and I getting a DEXA (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan. It accurately measures the bodyfat in each individual area of your body down to a tenth of a gram… and also measures bone density!! Cool stuff!!
